Cambodia

  • Cambodia is a country in South-East Asia with borders to Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Cambodia is about half the size of Germany and has a population of circa 15 million. In the development program of the United Nations Cambodia is on one of the lower ranks and therefore is one of the poorest countries in the world.

Cambodia is among the poorest countries in the world

Cambodia still hasn't fully recovered from the aftermath of years of civil war and the tyranny of the Khmer Rouge under Pol Pot. According to UNICEF Cambodia is ranked third on the list of the most heavily-mined countries in the world. Other than that corruption and child abuse are big problems in the country. But there are also many opportunities for a positive development. Since Cambodia experienced a certain degree of stability there is a mild economic growth. The overly young population (average age under 25) is looking back on an impressive and cultural rich past.

The Khmer Empire reached its prime in the 12th century and was among the most developed civilzations at that time. You can still sense the culturally rich past today when you visit the temples of Angkor.
